If I have never witnessed domestic violence occur, how can I know such a thing exists?

I don't see how an adult that's been around a while hasn't experienced it firsthand or been a witness to it. My mother was verbally and physically abusive and I've seen it with friends. If you haven't been a victim or witnessed it I guess you just can't believe it.
