Are all Power Supplies pretty much the same?

I need to replace my PSU on my Computer, its a custom built deskyop, but i didnt build it so i dont know a whole lot on it. Iv been looking on NewEgg and TigerDirect and its kinda confusing. I just want to know if PSU's are pretty much the same universally
