How do I apply for a summer job at 16?

I've never worked before and how do i apply for a job do i just go to the place ask for an application and then give it to them? i cant drive yet so my mom brings me and i feel ackward because she came to get the app with me is that like bad because i dont want to look like a little kid? i really do need to get a job then and i feel stupid because it's almost july 4th and ive been out of school for a month and i haven't even worked at all. i have no money of my own.
